Just yesterday I was reading an article about a woman named Mona Douglas (how's that for a Manx name!) who is considered by some to have been the leading Manx cultural revivalist of the 20th century. She not only participated in poetry, dance, music, and folklore, but she pushed (often controversially) to make those things a part of the Island's festivals. She taught these things, started a youth movement, and was the push behind the revival of Yn Chruinnaght, an Inter-Celtic Festival which celebrates Manx cultural heritage (and which we missed by mere days!). I think an understanding of this sort of cultural history is a very powerful force in building community. The Manx have a very unique cultural identity, which they are both proud to own and to share with anyone who comes along. So when some unsuspecting tourists happen upon them, they are only too happy to share the knowledge they posess. And this is due in large part to people like Mona Douglas who are willing to push for cultural revival even when it is controversial and may not be appreciated at the time.

Sad to hear that you will be posting less, but congratulations on your appointment to the Planning Board!

I saw part of "About A Boy" last night, which reminded me that the adage "No Man is an Island" is really true. We all need community.

Fascinating story, Shannon. It reminds me of Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point, where certain individuals can make a huge different (Mona Douglas must have been both a connector and a salesman!). And I LOVE About A Boy--one of my all time favorite films, but I'd forgotten about the allusion to the No Man is an Island concept. I always like how the Hugh Grant character divides his time into units!
